Maximum Simplicity

Hey you – leave the sweats at home! Here’s a really easy yet totally cute summer look you can copy with no trouble at all. Colorful maxi dress…plain white canvas sneakers worn without socks…Ray-Ban aviators – that’s it. Done and done. In fact, if you’re just wearing it around town to do your daytime errands or hang with friends this is the only way to wear a colorful maxi dress…save the jewelry and leather sandals you bought in Capri for dinner or cocktail time. Spotted recently on the street in Brooklyn… xo

Ruffled Feathers

Spotted one recent late afternoon in the ‘burg…an adorable 1920′s-inspired feather headband…and a well, okay it’s not exactly a ruffled skirt – it’s more of just a simple tiered skirt…but “Tiered Feathers” somehow didn’t grab me as a headline! haha x Mr. Newton

Sailing To Arabia

On the street in Soho – a nautical stripe tank + silk harem pants + patent white sandals = cool summer chic. Love the hair and sunglasses too! xo

Afternoon Delight – Pt. 2

Hi – here’s the rest of my summer street fashion/hot girls photos from the Pool Party in Williamsburg on Sunday. My favorite band that played was called “the Margherita pizza from Roberta’s pizza truck”. OK – well actually that’s not a band but whatever it was my favorite. If you don’t live here (or if you live on the Upper West Side or Staten Island) and you want to get a sense of what it’s like to be in NYC this summer, then you should read Karley Slutever’s sweeping generalizations. While it’s not an entirely accurate portrait of indie New York (e.g. me and my close friends don’t do coke), there’s a lot of truth to what she says. Plus having lived here for approx. one month, she has a rare mix of insider knowledge and an outsider’s perspective – usually you will have either one or the other. xx Mr. Newton

Afternoon Delight – Pt. 1

You know it’s summer in New York when the Pool Parties return to the waterfront in Williamsburg. I shot these photos there yesterday during the first show of the season…and you can expect to find me there pretty much every Sunday for the rest of the summer…Cut Copy 8/8!…Chromeo 8/22!…Roberta’s pizza all summer long! More photos tomorrow… xx

Lingerie As Outerwear – with class!

Magdalene works for a great lingerie brand – so perhaps this post should carry a “professionals only – don’t try this at home” warning – except that you can try this look at home (and on the street) if you follow her lead. I spotted her wearing this vintage 1950′s-era corset/girdle piece this week…and often see her around downtown wearing at least one piece of lingerie as outerwear. So how does she do it without looking trashy (not that I mind a bit of a trashy look now and then)?? Well as with so many things fashion-related it’s really just down to her total presentation and a certain je ne sais quoi. The shoes, the hair, the black biker shorts underneath, the look on her face and the way she carries herself…born in India, lived in London, and was carrying a French language course study book when I stopped her…she also told me that she had removed some garter straps and clips from the bottom of this piece because they were a bit too much. Sum total = classy lady! xx Mr. Newton

Made In U.S.A.

Other than shooting at the fashion weeks in Europe, my favorite venue for shooting street style is at a cool outdoor summer concert or festival. (Is it still street style if there aren’t any streets?) I met these stylish free spirits on the 4th of July at the She & Him show on Governors Island. The island sits squarely in the middle of New York harbor and the concert venue (which is called “The Beach”, although sadly there is no beach) offers a view not only of the downtown New York skyline but appropriately enough, the Statue of Liberty as well! In keeping with the “freedom” theme for the day, we all took free ferries over to the island and back and the show was free as well. Nice one America! xx Mr. Newton

Passion In The Park

Cute, casual summer style at the sold-out Passion Pit show in Prospect Park, Brooklyn on 6.29.10. We rode bikes and parked them in the special bike parking lot which had parking attendants to watch our bikes during the show – how cool is that? Afterwards, we rode over to Habana Outpost for Cuban sandwiches and roast corn outside in their huge courtyard. This was the best jam of the night…the one that got the whole park dancing and singing along. It’s summer in New York! xx Mr. Newton

The Sundowner

We’ve had some absolutely gorgeous but blazing hot weather so far this summer in New York…and although summer is just getting started properly, I’ve wasted no time and have already been going to the beach and to outdoor concerts and all sorts of fun stuff. Some days – when it’s stinking hot – I’ll sit inside with the AC on blast and edit photos and work on the computer. Late in the afternoon though, I like to head out with my camera and take a walk down Bedford Avenue near my apartment in Williamsburg. Bedford is only a few blocks from the water…and often we will get a breeze and a great sunset and some great light for photos. I met Alma on Bedford on a recent late afternoon. Isn’t she adorable?? xx

Boom Boom…Wow!

In the Meatpacking District…this dress was made for her body, her body was made for this dress. Me? I was just happy to be there to watch her walk. xx
