at the guy bourdin exhibit – bon marche, paris

From the Mr. Newton archive…a Guy Bourdin print in the window of Le Bon Marche, Paris…a car parked on the street and the building across the street are reflecting in the window…shot on 10.9.09 when I took a break from shooting at Paris Fashion Week and spent the afternoon at the Bourdin photo and film exhibit.

I often like to take photos of photos…just for fun…but it’s rare that I feel like I’ve added anything to the (usually already amazing) photos…I was kind of excited about how this one turned out though! x

Best Of 2011 – London Fashion Week Faves

Happy New Year everyone!! At the beginning of every year – immediately after Christmas and New Year’s Eve are wrapped up – I start getting excited for the upcoming fashion weeks! And I don’t just mean RTW Fashion Month either…there are so many emerging fashion weeks around the world now that, well, it’s always fashion week somewhere. To that end, I realized that with lots of travel rapidly approaching (more about that soon hehe)…and with lots of super new street style looks to shoot in early twenty twelve…I’d better post any favorites that I’m still sitting on from twenty eleven stat! haha Here then are a few (52 actually) of my favorite unpublished shots from the most recent London Fashion Week…all shot by me in September, 2011. I’m going to do similar posts soon with my favorite “previously un-posted on Mr. Newton” shots from the last round of fashion weeks in New York, Milan, and Paris. It’s like an after-Christmas street style warehouse sale up in here – making room for some new spring items!

A Flea Grows In Brooklyn

Ahh the sweet signs of spring in the city – cherry blossoms, birds singing, colorful spring fashion, people on bikes, outdoor dining, exposed flesh soaking up the sun…and the Brookyln Flea opening its outdoor season! You see the Flea – like the rest of us – is forced to spend the winter indoors. Starting this weekend however (and continuing until the weekend of Nov. 19th/20th), the Flea is back in its outdoor home in Ft. Greene on Saturdays, and in a new space on the waterfront in Williamsburg on Sundays. Yes – the Flea is coming to Williamsburg! As a proud resident of the ‘burg and as a huge fan of the Flea, I couldn’t be happier about this. I’ve been riding my bike to the Ft. Greene and (now defunct) DUMBO spaces for the past two years…to buy vintage clothes, furniture, and cool old photography books and magazines…and to eat at the food stalls from Pizza Moto (wood-burning oven pizza), The Loading Dock (fish tacos), and People’s Pops (artisanal popsicles and shave ice). Now I’ll still be riding my bike to the Flea and doing this stuff…it’s just that I won’t have as far to ride. Also, there are much better après Flea options for shopping/brunch/dinner, etc. in Williamsburg and Greenpoint than there are in Ft. Greene and DUMBO – always a good thing on a nice day. Of course I’ll be bringing my camera along with me too – to document all of the cool, casual, boho Flea style. Here now – from my archives – are 25 previously-unseen photos that I shot in and around the Flea last season. Hope u like ’em! xx

from the archive – Mia, Katy, and Molly

Here’s a couple of shots from the Mr. Newton photo archive – these were shot on September 5th, 2007. Mia, Katy, and Molly acting silly for my camera out at a Rock & Republic party during New York Fashion Week. Later on we all cabbed it over to the Beatrice Inn…ahh, memories…

Oh and speaking of my photo archive – did you know that I shot over one million street fashion and party photos all over the world before I ever started the Mr. Newton blog?? (And that’s just the digital archive – don’t even get me started on my 35mm and Polaroid archive.) This includes shots from Tokyo, Sydney, Capri, Helsinki, Los Angeles, Paris, London and many other cities…in certain cities where I’ve shot like Oslo and Copenhagen, literally no one has ever seen the photos…I’ve never shared them or posted them anywhere…until now that is. I always try to keep the content at Mr. Newton fresh and bang up to date – most of the photos that you see on my site were shot within a week of when they were posted – many were shot just a day or two before posting. While brand-new photos will always be the focus of my blog, I’ve decided that from time-to-time I’ll raid my archive and put up some of my favorites from the recent past. Most of these shots will be from 2007 – 2009…the period just before I started Mr. Newton. I’ll only be doing this occasionally and will always label these posts as “from the archive” – so you’ll know exactly when we’ve stepped away from our regular program. Cool?
I’m doing this because: 1. My friend Fifi from London who has seen some of the shots suggested that I should share them. 2. A huge amount of effort and money went into shooting them. 3. The people and styles on display are still totally relevant and inspiring. 4. I think you will like them. 5. I hate to let good photos sit on a hard drive and gather digital dust – photos are meant to be shared!
Lots of x’s, Mr. Newton
