Something I Can Dance To!

Hey – how’s it going? So it’s Thursday afternoon…just hanging around the Mr. Newton HQ in Williamsburg, Brooklyn…listening to some fun music with my interns – the usual. It has me thinking back to earlier this week (Monday to be exact) when I was out shooting street fashion in Nolita…I’d stopped by Ruby’s for their dead-on-authentic-yet-not-contrived-in-the-least Bondi Beach cafe vibe…and for a bowl of perfectly al dente spaghetti pesto and a fresh mint-and-pineapple smoothie (yum!)…and I ran into my Aussie friend M. and she was saying that her family is here from Sydney for the entire month of August and that they had rented a house out in Montauk. All of which got me thinking about summer vacations…and beaches…and surfing (I don’t know how but it looks like it would be amazing)…and Montauk…and Australia (I love it down there)…and about how August is such an awesome month to just lay around and do not much of anything.
Well, if you’re hanging around with friends and family during these last weeks of glorious summer, I thought that I would put together a little 21-track summer playlist for you. I used to DJ full-time for the fashion industry…and still do so occasionally these days. I also want to say – I don’t put any of these songs on here if I don’t genuinely LOVE them! I don’t make playlists to show how cool I am…or to demonstrate how ironic or cheeky I can be. I’m listening non-stop to every single one of these tracks below and they are listed here purely because I think that they are rad…and you should try to find all of them. Speaking of dancing, I’ve got to wrap this up and get out of here soon…I’m heading out to the sold-out Chromeo show at Bowery Ballroom tonight! Talk soon…xx Mr. Newton

Forever Summer

Hi there – so here (finally!) are all of my photos from the Siren Festival at Coney Island – Saturday July 17th, 2010. We had a really beautiful and hot day weather-wise…and I had so much fun shooting these and hanging out with friends! Siren is definitely one of the things that I always look forward to during the year…when we are stuck in the midst of winter. Once the day actually arrives however, it’s always a little bittersweet. Because Siren generally marks the peak of mid-summer for me…well, it’s sort of hard not to feel that summer is slipping away a bit afterwards. I’ve always tried to hold on to summer as long as possible – I think it goes back to being a kid and not wanting to return to school after summer break! While editing these I was listening to “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry (it seemed to fit my mood)…”We can dance until we die…you and I…we’ll be young forever”… xx Mr. Newton

Chinatown Chapeau

My cute stylist friend Nicole on the street in Chinatown…

(Also P.S. – I’m currently editing lots of photos that I shot at the Siren music fest in Coney Island last Saturday…some of you have been asking about those…coming soon! x)

Taxi To Le Bain

Arriving via NYC taxi on Sunday night at Le Bain

My L.A. actress friend Michelle is in town for a few days on business and to celebrate her birthday…that’s her in the top photos wearing the black tulle skirt. On Sunday, I went to Le Bain for sunset with her and Kaylee and Lo and Lena and other friends…then we hit a backyard party on the LES…and later on to Kenmare and St. Jerome. There were only a few people at St. Jerome on a Sunday…including a Lady Gaga look-a-like who was sitting on a stool at the bar kissing her boyfriend. (What do you mean that actually was Lady Gaga??) Then believe it or not, back to Bain…then Sway…then Lit. Then Lena fell out of a taxi and I decided to call it a night. (She didn’t get hurt though and she looked really good while falling because she was wearing vintage YSL!) xx Mr. Newton

Maximum Simplicity

Hey you – leave the sweats at home! Here’s a really easy yet totally cute summer look you can copy with no trouble at all. Colorful maxi dress…plain white canvas sneakers worn without socks…Ray-Ban aviators – that’s it. Done and done. In fact, if you’re just wearing it around town to do your daytime errands or hang with friends this is the only way to wear a colorful maxi dress…save the jewelry and leather sandals you bought in Capri for dinner or cocktail time. Spotted recently on the street in Brooklyn… xo

Ruffled Feathers

Spotted one recent late afternoon in the ‘burg…an adorable 1920′s-inspired feather headband…and a well, okay it’s not exactly a ruffled skirt – it’s more of just a simple tiered skirt…but “Tiered Feathers” somehow didn’t grab me as a headline! haha x Mr. Newton

Sailing To Arabia

On the street in Soho – a nautical stripe tank + silk harem pants + patent white sandals = cool summer chic. Love the hair and sunglasses too! xo

Afternoon Delight – Pt. 2

Hi – here’s the rest of my summer street fashion/hot girls photos from the Pool Party in Williamsburg on Sunday. My favorite band that played was called “the Margherita pizza from Roberta’s pizza truck”. OK – well actually that’s not a band but whatever it was my favorite. If you don’t live here (or if you live on the Upper West Side or Staten Island) and you want to get a sense of what it’s like to be in NYC this summer, then you should read Karley Slutever’s sweeping generalizations. While it’s not an entirely accurate portrait of indie New York (e.g. me and my close friends don’t do coke), there’s a lot of truth to what she says. Plus having lived here for approx. one month, she has a rare mix of insider knowledge and an outsider’s perspective – usually you will have either one or the other. xx Mr. Newton

Afternoon Delight – Pt. 1

You know it’s summer in New York when the Pool Parties return to the waterfront in Williamsburg. I shot these photos there yesterday during the first show of the season…and you can expect to find me there pretty much every Sunday for the rest of the summer…Cut Copy 8/8!…Chromeo 8/22!…Roberta’s pizza all summer long! More photos tomorrow… xx
