The Sundowner

We’ve had some absolutely gorgeous but blazing hot weather so far this summer in New York…and although summer is just getting started properly, I’ve wasted no time and have already been going to the beach and to outdoor concerts and all sorts of fun stuff. Some days – when it’s stinking hot – I’ll sit inside with the AC on blast and edit photos and work on the computer. Late in the afternoon though, I like to head out with my camera and take a walk down Bedford Avenue near my apartment in Williamsburg. Bedford is only a few blocks from the water…and often we will get a breeze and a great sunset and some great light for photos. I met Alma on Bedford on a recent late afternoon. Isn’t she adorable?? xx

Here’s a couple of shots from the Mr. Newton photo archive – these were shot on September 5th, 2007. Mia, Katy, and Molly acting silly for my camera out at a Rock & Republic party during New York Fashion Week. Later on we all cabbed it over to the Beatrice Inn…ahh, memories…

Oh and speaking of my photo archive – did you know that I shot over one million street fashion and party photos all over the world before I ever started the Mr. Newton blog?? (And that’s just the digital archive – don’t even get me started on my 35mm and Polaroid archive.) This includes shots from Tokyo, Sydney, Capri, Helsinki, Los Angeles, Paris, London and many other cities…in certain cities where I’ve shot like Oslo and Copenhagen, literally no one has ever seen the photos…I’ve never shared them or posted them anywhere…until now that is. I always try to keep the content at Mr. Newton fresh and bang up to date – most of the photos that you see on my site were shot within a week of when they were posted – many were shot just a day or two before posting. While brand-new photos will always be the focus of my blog, I’ve decided that from time-to-time I’ll raid my archive and put up some of my favorites from the recent past. Most of these shots will be from 2007 – 2009…the period just before I started Mr. Newton. I’ll only be doing this occasionally and will always label these posts as “from the archive” – so you’ll know exactly when we’ve stepped away from our regular program. Cool?
I’m doing this because: 1. My friend Fifi from London who has seen some of the shots suggested that I should share them. 2. A huge amount of effort and money went into shooting them. 3. The people and styles on display are still totally relevant and inspiring. 4. I think you will like them. 5. I hate to let good photos sit on a hard drive and gather digital dust – photos are meant to be shared!
Lots of x’s, Mr. Newton

Boom Boom…Wow!

In the Meatpacking District…this dress was made for her body, her body was made for this dress. Me? I was just happy to be there to watch her walk. xx

Jump For My Love

I heart boho chic so much…here’s Haylee in Soho recently with flowers, sunshine, a floppy hat, and a soft faded denim jumpsuit from A.P.C.…I bought the flowers for her as a present because she looked so pretty.

California Gurl

Haute hippie Shannon on the street in Tribeca wearing J Brand bell bottoms and a cool chain headband that she made herself. She’s a West Coast transplant…looks to me like you can take the girl out of California, but you can’t take the California out of the girl! xo

Summer Romance

It’s a rather sordid-yet-ongoing affair between one man, a camera, and the stylish girls of New York City…which look is your favorite?? xxx

Totally Bummed Out

I nearly fell off my bike when I saw this cheeky co-ed cutie on the NYU campus this week…

Shorts have been getting progressively shorter for a little while now (thank you Mr. Charney!), until finally this summer I have seen multiple girls wearing shorts so short that well, the fabric ends before their butt does. (In addition to partially exposed rear ends, the other wing of this trend is girls who seem to be walking around wearing nothing but a shirt and shoes – they are generally wearing shorts as well, but they are so short that they don’t extend far enough to actually be seen by the naked eye.) I happen to think that this look – the partially exposed bum cheeks look, I mean – is totally cute and mostly innocent – not trashy. It helps though if you have – as here – a fairly small bum and an overall fresh-faced ponytailed naivety…or you should at least be able to fake this innocent vibe convincingly. The more junk you have in the trunk with a full face of makeup and kitten heels…well, this look can quickly slide from “a young Demi Moore” into “Season 2 of Jersey Shore“. I’m just sayin’.
So what do you guys think about this look? Would you/do you wear shorts this short? Are you “cheeky” enough to pull this off while still looking like a semi-innocent cutie? xx Mr. Newton

The Love Blondes

On Mercer Street near Gourmet Garage recently…I was getting lemonade on a hot day…they reminded me of this cool song from the 80′s called “Love Blonde”…it goes, “Something’s comin’ down the street…she’s got that sensuality”…

Cool As Ice

Some cool kids I spotted yesterday on Rivington Street…
